Resetting the Cisco router with the reset button.

This method is preferable for the routers which have the presence of a reset button.

  • Firstly, turn off the router from the power cord.
  • Now you need to connect the router to your power cord.
  • Plug-in the power cord to your power source.
  • Search for the reset button on your Cisco router.
  • Once you have found the reset button, press and hold it for sometimes while the router powers on.
  • After 10 seconds, you need to release the Cisco router reset button.
  • The router will finish booting in 5 to 10 minutes. Wait for the router to finish booting.
  • The router lights will tell if it has finished booting or not. If the router lights are solid or blinking, the booting of the router has completed.
  • The next time you turn on the router, your router will be reset to the factory settings.

Resetting the Cisco router without the reset button

This method is preferable for the Cisco routers, which do not have the reset button. These routers can be reset using the router commands.

  • Firstly, turn off the router from the power cord.
  • Now you need to connect the router to your power cord.
  • Plug-in the power cord to your power source.
  • Your laptop needs to be connected to the console port of the router using a console cable.
  • The router will finish booting in 5 to 10 minutes. Wait for the router to finish booting.
  • The router lights will tell if it has finished booting or not. If the router lights are solid or blinking, the booting of the router has completed.
  • Turn on your laptop’s terminal emulator program and access the command line interface (CLI) of your router using the same.
  • Now, enter the commands in boldface to remove your Cisco router’s existing configuration and reload the default factory configuration.

router> enable

router# write erase

Erasing the nvram filesystem will remove all configuration files! Continue? (Press Enter key to confirm)

router# reload

Proceed with reload? (Press Enter key to confirm)

-OR-

Would you like to enter the initial configuration dialog? (yes|no) no (Press Enter key)

–OR–

Do you want to save the configuration of the AP? (yes|no) no (Press Enter key)

  • Wait for some time until the reloading of the Cisco router finishes.
  • A CLI completion message will appear on the screen.
  • Exit your laptop’s terminal emulator window.
  • Now, turn off the router.
